Bronchitol Patient Profiles

Leaping into life!

Keen amateur basketballer Paul Kingsley was considering giving up the game he loves after severe bronchiectasis left him sidelined.

"I was spending more time off the court than on because of my bronchiectasis," says 48-year-old Paul, who's been playing competition basketball since he was 21.

"I was constantly coughing throughout the game; three minutes out of five I'd be coughing up a lung."

Paul was diagnosed with bronchiectasis a year ago after "trying every antibiotic known to man" to treat what some doctors thought was the flu.

Fortunately the diagnosing doctor recommended Paul be placed on the Phase III trial of Bronchitol for bronchiectasis. Within a few weeks of using Bronchitol he was back in the game, breathing much easier.

"My lung capacity and peak flow were the best results I'd had in years," recalls Paul. "As soon as I started on it I knew I wanted to stay on it because it was making such a difference."

"But before Bronchitol, nothing worked. I was told to live with it by the doctors," explains Paul.

For Paul, the benefits of Bronchitol aren't just being felt on the basketball court.

"My wife was ready to divorce me or kick me out into another room because of my coughing," he recalls with a smile. "So the outcome on Bronchitol has been excellent in terms of she's not going to divorce me for that just yet!"

Freedom to cruise

A smile spreads across Daphne Fisher's face as she contemplates her forthcoming trip on a luxury cruise liner.

It will be her fourth big ocean cruise and this time it's aboard the Queen Mary on a 24- day voyage to Japan, Thailand and Hong Kong.

Life has not always been so easy for the 66- year old who was raised in an orphanage following the death of her parents, lost her husband to cancer and has spent a lifetime battling the lung disease bronchiectasis.

Plagued by constant coughing Daphne had regular admissions to hospital, suffered a partial lung collapse and pneumonia. She avoided going outdoors and had trouble working in air conditioning.

But she says a decision to join the first clinical trial of Bronchitol turned her life around.

"I heard the trial advertised on the radio and I thought anything is better than going through what I'm experiencing so I may as well try it and it's the best thing I ever did. I noticed a difference within two weeks. I was able to clear the mucus for the first time. It was better than physio."

"It's made a huge difference. I can walk a long way, I can go out and enjoy life, I dance and I don't have any problems. I've got a full life now. Before I used to think that I'd be on oxygen and have an early end."

An end to embarrassing and persistent coughing has given Daphne the confidence to book her cruise trips and share a cabin.

"Previously I was terrified. I would have to sneak off and cough. People don't want to know you because they think you are contagious. A lot of people are very tolerant but there are plenty that aren't. Now I don't have to worry."

Daphne is taking Bronchitol on a compassionate use program and is determined to continue living life to the fullest.

"I want to get everything I can out of life. I've have a lot of friends and they love it now that I'm not coughing all the time. I keep in touch with all my cruising friends and we write to each other from all over the world. Next year a lady from Wales wants me to do a full world cruise with her and I just might!"
