Bronchitol is Pharmaxis' second product in development. Bronchitol, is a drug designed to reduce the amount of mucus build-up in the lungs of patients suffering from chronic respiratory conditions. Bronchitol hydrates the lungs, helps restore normal lung clearance, and allows patients to clear mucus more effectively. Pharmaxis is developing Bronchitol for diseases including cystic fibrosis and bronchiectasis. Bronchitol is a proprietary formulation of mannitol administered as a dry powder in a convenient hand-held inhaler. Bronchitol for the treatment of cystic fibrosis has been approved for use in Australia, and in Europe it has been recommended for approval by the European Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP). It is currently in ongoing clinical trials in patients with bronchiectasis.
